What pincode serviceability means

A pincode is serviceable when a carrier has a last-mile branch that delivers to it, and the answer differs by carrier and by service. A pincode may accept prepaid parcels but not cash on delivery, accept surface but not air, or accept deliveries but not reverse pickups.

India has around 19,000 delivery pincodes in active use across the major networks. Coverage is nearly universal in metros and tier-1 cities; the differences show up in tier-3 towns, hill districts, the north-east and the islands, where only some carriers run last-mile.

  • Prepaid coverage is wider than COD coverage for most carriers
  • Reverse pickup (returns) coverage is narrower again
  • Remote pincodes may add a handling charge and longer transit
  • Coverage changes over time, so check before promising delivery dates

What to do when a pincode is not serviceable

If a pincode is unserviceable for one carrier, another may still deliver it, which is the practical reason to book through a platform that compares carriers rather than committing to one network. Where no carrier delivers, the usual options are shipping to a nearby serviceable pincode for self-collection, or offering prepaid only if the restriction is COD.

For sellers, the cheapest fix is checking at the point of order rather than at dispatch: a COD order into a prepaid-only pincode becomes an RTO, and the return costs roughly another leg of freight.

Why is COD unavailable at some pincodes?
Cash on delivery needs a last-mile partner who can collect and remit money, which carriers restrict in areas with low volumes or higher risk. The same pincode is often still serviceable for prepaid shipments.
Do remote pincodes cost more?
Yes. Remote zones such as the north-east, Jammu and Kashmir and the islands are priced in a higher band, and some carriers add a handling charge. Transit times are longer too.
Can I still ship if the buyer's pincode is not covered?
Often another carrier covers it, which is why comparing carriers per shipment matters. If none does, ship to a nearby serviceable pincode for collection, or switch the order to prepaid if the block is COD-specific.
